The Importance of Branding

I was recently discussing the importance of branding with some people from outside the design industry, and its very interesting to see the differences in opinions across different ages when it comes to putting a value on a companies brand.

I have a strong opinion that branding is not just about marketing - it represents who you are, what your organisation aspires to be and in the modern business environment it is fundamental to an organisations success or otherwise. It effects almost every aspect of a business from community perception to staff recruitment and without a strong well thought out brand you leave yourself at an immediate initial disadvantage when competing for clients.

Drummond Street Annual Report with Cookbook

You read it correctly - this year Drummond Street continued their creative approach to annual report design by including a BBQ cookbook inside their annual report. The cookbook featured staff’s and friends of Drummond Street’s favorite recipes along with photos of them preparing each recipe.

An innovative idea has garnered a great response - a lot more interesting than the usual tedious content of an annual report!

The New Year

Well we made it through another year and along the way we have been privileged to be a part of some very exciting projects of all shapes and sizes. A big thankyou to our growing list of clients for their loyalty and for letting us help them grow and develop their businesses.

We’re looking forward to the challenges of the year ahead as our business continues to grow and as improving technology opens up new and exciting design avenues.

New Server

We recently upgraded our on-site data storage and back-up systems - the cornerstone of this upgrade was the purchase of a newly released HP EX490 Server which is capable of housing four hot swappable hard drives,  giving us up to 8TB of storage in this one device alone.

The server was supplied by our IT hardware partner Cootacom and after just a few weeks of operation we are already loving the enhanced speed and storage space of our upgraded network.

Breast Cancer Network E-Greeting

We recently completed a Christmas email template for the team at the Breast Cancer Network to send out as a thank you to their supporters - the final design even included an angel with animated flapping wings

Unfortunately anyone who received the email in Microsoft Outlook would have missed the animation because the visual renderer in Outlook is still very old school - sadly this is the sort of limitation we constantly face with email communications where Outlook maintains its place as the lowest common denominator.

Brimbank Council Community Plan Summary

After a huge amount of community consultation and immense effort, Brimbank City Council formulated a Community Plan to help guide them over the next 30 years to ensure the  municipality is developed to meet the needs and desires of its residents.

As the first stage in the publication of this plan a summary document was required while the final main document was being finalised.

The result was a roll out brochure of three A4 panels with a clear and effective ordering of the information including numerous translations into relevant languages.

New Designer

Just a quick note to welcome a new designer into the hd design fold - Andrew has just joined the team having previously worked as a freelancer.

Andrew comes to us with a solid print design skill set and a passion for photography - and for those of you wondering about the image, its the front cover of Andrew’s resume!

EJ Whitten Legends Game 2009

We are once again proud to be associated with the Ray White EJ Whitten Legends game which both raises awareness of prostate cancer but also raises much needed funds for the EJ Whitten Foundation to fund research into the disease. We look forward to seeing you at this years game (remember if you can’t make it on the night its broadcast on Channel 9) on the 30th of June!

Out With The Old

We finally have our new site up and running, well we will a few minutes after I finish typing this, and we couldn’t be happier.

Our new site is built on wordpress (thanks guys) and will make it a lot quicker and easier for us to keep things up to date - so no excuses from now on for not having our latest and greatest work posted up here.

We hope you like the new site, if you have any feedback don’t hesitate to let us know - we know our mothers will!!

Adobe CS4

We recently upgraded all our design software from Adobe CS2 to Adobe CS4 (we never got round to CS3 - sorry guys).

CS4 on the whole is a far superior experience and the differences in Flash and Fireworks in particular are awesome. Although there are still a few early frustrations with software crashes and the like but we’ll keep sending in the crash reports and hopefully we can put that whole thing behind us soon.

Great work from the people at Adobe - thanks for making life that much easier.

Twitter Got Us

So we finally gave in to the whole social networking thing, we still refuse to get a facebook or myspace page but we succumbed instead to the micro-blogging, idea-sharing, contemporary networking space that is Twitter.

If you want to look us up just do a search for hd design in the find people form… We don’t do a lot of insightful updates - but if you’re lucky you might see something useful!
